Nargile yok?

I just read in the papers that Erdogan now wants to outlaw nargile bars in Istanbul? The guy in the sheesha cafe here just told me on Friday that he is planning to go to Istanbul for 5 days next week...I assume to buy up all the outlawed tobacco?
Does this mean that the rightwing Islamic fundamentalist shift is in the making now, in Turkey? Last summer I already saw a few women walking the streets in Istanbul covered head to toe in hijab, black abayas, like in Iran...
Should I still spend my holiday there, as a lone woman?
There has also been a fatal poisoning case in Kemer, Antalya region. Three dead German high school graduates who drank a bottle of moonshine, sold to them by the hotel bar after hours...
I am feeling a little apprehensive now and still have not bought a ticket.

i don't the answers... but i know my experiences...

hundreds of thousands(maybe millions?) of us foreigners live here and in 2008 almost 31 MILLION (Wikipedia) tourists came. look at the very few number of tourist/foreigner related problems compared to how many are here...? i feel like this is a very small risk. there are always a few problems. and is this risk measurably any different from normal life anywhere?

smoking in general has been banned bit by bit for the last year and half at least - actually, today it's supposed to be out of all bars and clubs too!(i think). i'm not surprised nargile bars are also a target, as it is tobacco. but it's sad to see the tradition get pushed out. you know, banning public smoking seems to be as much a conservative issue as it is a modern / health oriented decision. also, in 2010, istanbul will be the "cultural capitol" of europe and is hosting many events, and there is much evidence that they are working very hard to make things nicer.

there have always been women fully covered in black in istanbul. this is not new. in the 3 1/2 years i've been here i have seen no discernible changes. i have lived in modern, ethnic, and conservative neighborhoods, and i visit in many diverse parts of the city that tourists never see. yes there are conservatives, but things are also very modern. neither side *seems*(on the street) to be growing or shrinking. i regularly see women covered(a variety of ways), walking arm in arm with modern euro looking women(friends?family?), just being normal with each other...

so that's my experience. exercising the normal travel precautions and good judgment is your best prevention of problems. after that, we're all in fates' hands...

i hope that you do choose to travel here again. if so, bon voyage.

Actually, this sounds good to me, that article. Now, have they reduced the nicotine and tar content of Turkish cigarettes yet? In Japan you get to choose between 1 mg, 3,5,6, or 8mg...
In Turkey I had to walk across town to find a store that sold Winston silver or something, with the "low" 5mg... next time I brought my own carton of the 1mg kind from home....
My Turkish friend was always appalled when I wanted to visit a nargile cafe. Still wondering why, exactly.

"Does this mean that the rightwing Islamic fundamentalist shift is in the making now, in Turkey?"

          - er, yeah. Helllooooo.....

But as long as you avoid drinking moonshine, I don't see any reason not to come anyway.

No reduced nicotine cigarettes here that I know. I was in France this spring with my Turkish cigarettes and my friends there were shocked at how much nicotine was in them - 8 times more than even in regular French cigarettes! Mmmm. It's good for the brain.

Winston Silver has only 5mg, I think, and Parlament Aqua maybe only three. You can get cartons of it dutyfree in Istanbul airport. Parlament is one of the smoothest and most expensive cigarettes you can buy in Turkey.
Helloooo what, JM? I know abut all the protests about Erdogan but there were very conflicting reports about him. Does the head scarf issue mean equal rights for Kurdish girls in universities or is it the backdoor to reintroducing the head scarf to more women? I don't know. But I have seen a girl wearing a shiny blood red silk headscarf with a tailored egg shell coloured shortish raincoat walking arm in arm with her boyfriend/ new husband down the promenade of Antalya, and that head scarf looked positively sexy.
My choice, in case I would need one, was the emerald silk one with the black and white leopard pattern near the edge, shown on ZDF tv, by that female Istanbul fashion designer who had her collection ready in time for Erdogan in case he won the elections. I was there during that time, watching the ZDF documentaries on the internet.
I do not drink Vodka, but meth laced kayisi juice is not healthy either, can happen anytime, in my experience. I have turned into a soft drink sommelier, in Turkey.

Ewww.... no, I will never be able to see a headscarf as sexy...

Yeah... who knows? A history professor from Bosphorus University I talked to here said that there aren't really MORE women wearing headscarves these days... it's that the ones that DO, don't stay in the house all the time like they used to. They actually go out. And, yeah, they make out with their boyfriends in parks, they smoke... they sometimes even show a little leg (well, at least a little ankle).

I went to the Princess Islands today, and it was pretty surreal... all these headscarf girls with those sweltering housecoat thingies they wear walking around right next to all these shirtless men (including me) they were checking out. It was actually a nice feeling. I'm not going to complain until someone tells me I have to put my shirt back on at the beach.

Funny, I smoke Parliament Night Blues... 0.8 mg of nicotine, down from my preferred brand, Davidoff, with 0.9...

Oh my god, no, make that 0,8mg nicotine vs. 0,5 and 0,3. Not 8mg.
Yeah, the Aqua or Silver brands are the ones to go for in Turkey, they are lighter. In Japan, it is the "one"-brands, which all have 0,1mg nicotine and 1mg tar which is the closest you can get to pure air, these days. Last time I brought a carton of that to Turkey, to save my lungs from the other stuff.
Raincoats and headscarves vs shirtless men, in the heat. I don't know how the women can stand it. At least it is not black polyester chador.
And lots of Turkish women smoke. Almost everybody I know in Turkey smokes. The only thing that shocks Turkish men sometimes is when I ask them to take me to a nargile cafe...and I am still not sure why. Is that a men only place, plus a few prostitutes, like in Morocco?

I dunno, but these Parliament Aqua Blues are delicious. Thanks.

                  Interesting Turkey smoking facts:
In Turkey, cigarette packs actually have 20 cigarettes in them (as opposed to the - what is it? - 17 they put in German packs).
It's now a 62 TL fine for smoking in bars and restaurants.
Maybe the latter is why they were making a fuss about closing nargile cafes.

Oh my god, thanks for telling me! 62 YTL? That is a looot of money in Turkey. So where do you go when you want to smoke? Can you smoke on the restaurant terrace outside?
