the eclipse

hello all.

so i'm planning a trip out to turkey for the eclipse on march 29th next year.

where do you guys think the best place to view the eclipse would be? as in, on the coast or inland? any particularly spectacular sites? also particularly in terms of weather/cloud cover? is it clearer inland or on the coast? what about times of day? and for that time of year in general?

The best idea is to call or e-mail travel agencies and ask if they have tours for this purpose, and which sites they are going (without notifying that you already arranged the trip, if you have). Bullseye .....

You'll have a wonderful time. Wish I were going back!

I went to the 11 August 1999 eclipse NE of Ankara with a bus tour. I agree that they offer more flexibility, since they can change directions depending on last-minute updates in the weather forecast. We went to a little town's athletic field where they were having their 15 minutes of fame for being on the line of totality. The tour also included a couple days in Cappadocia, where I was going anyways, and the price was not very expensive.

This will be better weather for touring, but one can't reschedule eclipses!

BTW, if you fly within turkey, they have an unusual requirement that you identify baggage at the plane, _after_ you've checked it in. A couple of my companions had their baggage delayed because they didn't know, so it didn't get loaded.

I didn't get to Konya, but did many other sites of the bronze age and classical period, of which my fave was Aphrodisias, which is bigger than Ephesus, and less well traveled.

    Try this site: sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclips...06.html
Has fairly detailed maps of the path through Turkey.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say the Black Sea is still going to be freezing.
I'd vote Antalya... except Kona is a religious center, and that could be more interesting.

Manavgat looks fine on the NASA maps besides it is a nice small town, i have no idea how it looks like in the winter though.

Turkey is still cold in March. Along the coast (western Turkey) the weather is more mild but not swimming season for sure. East Turkey, there probably will be a lot of snow still plus, not the greatest idea to travel to bird-flu affected areas.
The Black Sea is gorgeous if you don't mind the cold but I agree with JM, Konya sounds like it would be a nice city. It is very spiritual and I am sure there will be something incorportated with the eclipse and Mevlana/Rumi events.
Well, if you are into party type of places, settle for somewhere on the coast like Antalya.
While Antalya is beautiful, its not my thing. I much prefer more secluded places.

                konya...
a city does not become spiritual only because it hosts the mauseleum of a great thinker. not because of its past, but through the everyday lives of the people who make up that place. their outlook to the world, their cooperation, their togetherness.
today konya is only but a horrible reflection of what happens to an 'other' culture when it is modernized/westernized from the top, when it is appropriated through western technology, when spirituality becomes commoditized...

i work there every summer, obviously i am a bit biased - i admit - but people, if its your first time in turkey and want to live the eclipse in peace and within a beautiful nature, and where you wont freeze your ass, look at places in southern turkey.

btw-- we have a saying "mart kapidan baktirir, kazma kurek yaktirir" and its about march... how its not a good idea to think spring comes in march. i have seen snow in central turkey during march. but with this funky globally warmed weather it could also be warm...

Yeah, it was incredible... we viewed the eclipse from atop a medieval castle in Olympos! Can't imagine a better setting for an eclipse...

That's the one. Only 5 of us up there, and from our vantage point we could see the Acropolis crowded with eclipse seekers, and from the beach the flash of eclipse glasses and cameras. Even without the eclipse, it was a wonderful day.
