Does anybody know if the Turkish army has any way, easy or otherwise, of finding and contacting active-duty personnel? I'm trying to track down a friend who, last I talked to him, was a tank commander in a base in or near Edirne. Google was never designed for something as arcane as this ..!

If he thinks there is a way to track down people in the army, I will PM ya for details.
When was the last time you talked to your friend? -

Fri, May 25, 2007 - 9:52 AMNo, I don't think he ever told me what his first posting was. I think he was in Edirne for a long time, though. He doesn't just operate the tanks; he's an instructor who teaches new recruits how to drive the tanks. Does the Turkish army really keep its people moving around EVERY THREE MONTHS? What's the logic behind that? Hmmm, while on the topic ... is military service required for all Turkish men? When you join up, does the army try to keep you close to home, or do they require that you serve in another part of the country (like in the former Yugoslavia)? Just wondering. -

Re: Weird Request ...
Fri, May 25, 2007 - 3:36 PMNot every three months, just first three months and then another place..The reason first three months is about training, so he is a instructor and definitely couple places he has to be.. you got a figure it out where is the tank training places... One is in my city Ankara Etimesgut there might be other places like you mention Edirne.. But the thing is he might be a soldier permanently cos u said he is an instructor.. Yes, every men has to join military in Turkey.. If you are graduated from only high school your doing as a private, or you have bachelor degree then you are getting rank lieutenant.. But their duration only 12 months (might be change with new regulations) then you are free again... Where are you gonna go when you are soldier is all about drawing after first three month.... But, special thing like being a tank person again you might be go certain places...
I hope it helps and good luck......

Re: Weird Request ...
Fri, May 25, 2007 - 9:49 AMMerhaba, Krista, nasilsiniz? Nice to talk to you again. I haven't heard from him since we left Bergama. I've sent letters and packages, but have gotten no response, which is pretty weird. Nobody in his family has access to email except for his sister, but I'm having a hell of a time tracking her down, too. I'm just wondering if he got press-ganged into the Turkish contingent of peacekeepers who got sent to Lebanon when their troubles flared up several months ago. Yeah, please ask your husband if he knows anything about this kind of thing. I know that the US military has a pretty good system in place ... a friend of mine tracked down an old friend of ours with it, and it only took a few hours! OK, take care.
