hi there maggie--can't say that i know too much about bursa, i also only visited once, and also didn't have much time to wander, but i definitely recommend climbing up to uludag as soon as you have the chance. there is a dolmus from somewhere in downtown bursa, though i'm afraid i don't know exactly where. i also have a friend in bursa who organizes cheap, beautiful outdoor trips in the area on weekends--he's an absolute sweetheart, but he doesn't speak english, don't know whether this would be a problem. still, if you like, i can send you his email address. i hope to spend more time in bursa myself, i was surprised by its beauty and charmed by its quiet pace after too many months of istanbul's incessant chaos (i'm still in istanbul, and i love it, of course, but it is without a doubt a city that demands a break from time to time). so, right, enjoy your trip here...from another vaguely central californian in turkey, jeremy

hi jeremy, istanbul is a great city but i didn't want to deal with the chaos for the long-term. chose bursa because of its peaceful atmosphere as well as the mountains which i always like to be near. the thermal springs and lake iznik and uluabat also drew me. i'll definitely be spending plenty of time in the uludag. i'm really at the beginning with language acquisition. it will be my main focus for the first several months. total immersion has been my best learning tool in the past. i plan to wear my neighbors out with my cali-accented turkish.

Hi Maggie, even though, being away a long time from Turkey, I would like to state couple things about Green Bursa..Yeah, we called green for Bursa coz of, as u guess, vegeties r great also close mountains such as Uludag has plenty choices to make some activities mostly winter season. Bursa was one of the capitol of Ottoman Empire so has bunch of historical places to visit..BTW, in which neigborhood (Semt-mahalle) r u gonna stay..? I highly recommend Cekirge, it is nice and clean neighborhood..
If u get bored u can take a break to go Ankara or istanbul, but, like u said getting away from big cities hectic living, Bursa is not a bad choice..
Good luck and hope everything work out fine for u.
