Anybody know what the best service here is? Or, more specifically, the cheapest?
And where do you go to buy the actual phone?
The ones I've seen are all over 100YTL - I find that incredibly expensive - my last one was free with a plan!

Re: cell phones
Mon, August 29, 2005 - 1:04 PMEveryone has Turkcell or Avea.... I have Avea, which is a little cheaper, and I just buy kontur (credit) as I go.... 250 kontur is about 21-23 YTL, depending on where you go. It lasts me for 2-3 weeks.... 1 minute of talking to people on Avea OR other networks is 3 kontur, 1 message is 3 konturs.... etc.
Good luck on the phone though... I would recommend you find a Turkish person to go with you. I bought my 1st one in Eminonu at some shady shop for about 130 YTL. 2nd phone was purchased next to the school I work at for about the same.
It's not like the US-- you won't get some great plan with a free phone. :( -

Re: cell phones
Mon, August 29, 2005 - 1:42 PMHey, thanks!
Sounds like Avea is the way to go. I'm going with some friends to pick one out this week.
I still want to meet you! I just got a place in Sultanhamet and have another month before I start work. Want to get coffee some time? -

Mon, August 29, 2005 - 1:43 PMps - what do you mean by 'depending on where you go?' Is it cheaper to buy minutes in some places than in others? -

Re: cell phones
Wed, August 31, 2005 - 12:35 PMIf you buy kontur from an official Avea store, it's usually 1-2 lira cheaper than if you are desperate and buy it from, say... a newspaper stand... that's all. :)
and PS
If you want to meet, let's do it soon because I am leaving Turkey in October. :( -

Re: cell phones
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 9:08 AMturcell seems best for reception. avea is the cheapest especially if you are a student, but doesnt work everywhere. some plans have free in - company calling (like turkcell to turkcell)
another option is telsim.
there are also monthly plans and Kontor (credit) plans (these use calling cards. Most people in turkey use the calling cards. The phones all work on GSM service with sim cards.
if you have a phone already and it works with a sim card it might work in turkey. all you have to do is make sure that its not sim- locked by the company which you got it from ( you can ask the company). you can get the sim lock removed ussually under 25 dollars.
theres also some different phone ettique in turkey ....like people will do whats called a "cagri" which i found very odd when i first got there but now used to it...
its when they dial and let the phone ring once and hang up - its meant to mean they are thinking abut you and this game can go on for hours if you reply . its done cus it costs no money !
